Ergonomic Lending Library

Updated February 7, 2009

The Ergonomic Lending Library has closed its doors. It's been a great idea and seems to have definitely helped a lot of people, but I can't continue to maintain it. In 8 years, only one item was unreturned. Thank you to all those who've used it and provided feedback and kind remarks. And thank you to the manufacturers who've donated their products:

On-Hand?

Description

Yes

Forearm rest that reduces stress on upper body from slouching over. Unless you'll be simply lying it on top of a large desk, requires that the front edge of your desk surface be between approx 1/2" and 2" thick. I've used this myself and I am convinced it helped a lot, so much so that I no longer need it.

Vertical Mouse $74.95

My Full Review

This is the prior generation of Vertical Mouse that we loan out, the one I used for about a year. I now have the new generation, VM2. Same basic functionality, minor technological improvements, nicer color. (That's what counts in computers, cool colors, right?) But seriously it's still my favorite. In fact at work, I also have my 17-inch monitor sitting on its side so I can work in "portrait" mode, so I've noticed I have quite an eccentric desktop, both rotated 90 degrees.

Five buttons in all, all but #1 programmable I think. Three buttons and a wheel on the right side; one button at the top, left, where the thumb is. I program that one for "Back" on the web, which also works in Windows Explorer. And I program the bottom of the three buttons as a double-click.

  • D.N. of Des Moines offered his email address (mountaineer@runbox.com) and these comments: "...convinced my work to buy one for use here and I use yours at home. I would have suffered long and hard without both, especially when I forgot to take it home or back to work. I "fix" our corporate computers for a living, and if I spend too much time using the mice on others' desks, I can really tell by the end of the day. Its design has truly helped."

Quillmouse (Retail $99.95)

Generously donated to the library by the manufacturer. Website: http://www.quillmouse.com

From the same folks that offer Flextend, Designer Appliances, Inc, this is an optical mouse with two buttons and a wheel button. It orients the wrist more vertically than a conventional mouse, untwisting the arm, and it doesnt' require a pinching motion to move the cursor because your wrist sits in a trough that has a lip on the right side. This feature seems to be the reason for its listing on the GSA Section 508 website.
